Band Names: Part three

When I wrote about band names back in the summer I wrote lists of ten I liked and ten that I didn't. Here are ten things I think about some specific band names.

10)I think Crimson Glory was a great name, it's just a shame they wore those silly masks.
9)I think Danger Danger should have spent more time picking out a name.
8)I think that Dream Theater is a simple, but effective name.
7)I think that Saigon Kick sounds like the name of a sauce you would use for a stir-fry.
6)I think Kix sounds silly at first, but grows on you after a while.
5)I think that Circus of power sounds like someone was trying to hard too seem cool.
4)I think that Fastway was a good way for "Fast" Eddie Clark to name the band after himself.
3)I think Waysted was a lousy way for Pete Way to name the band after himself (note: Pete Way was going to be in Fastway with Clark, but pulled out and Clark decided to keep the name as it was anyhow).
2)I think Prong is one of my favorite band names of all time.
1)I think that Dokken doesn't really rhyme with Rockin'.

Feel free to list any band names you like or don't like.

Great list! A few thoughts:

Slaughter would have been a kick-ass name if the band produced death metal instead of pop hair metal.

Dangerous Toys was always a much better name than a band.

Those Canadians had some good, simple names. It's hard to beat Rush and Triumph. Even Saga isn't that bad.

Even though a lot of the 80s guitarist spin-off bands had names based on their star's name (see Lynch Mob), one of the best names from this kind of group was Blue Murder for John Sykes's band.

Nothing beats Black Sabbath.

David-I agree with all of your thoughts. The clown mascot for Dangerous Toys was also better than their music.

I heard a great new band name the other day but haven't heard any of their stuff. It is a rock band with a female lead singer. 'Morningwood'. Gotta luv it.

Having a good name is great, but you can't always jusge a band by their name. I remember going to see Corrosion of conformity in 1992 and there were two local bands opening and I knew nothing about either of them. One was called Bulk Mulch which I thought was a poor name and the other was Gridlock which I thought was a good name. Bulk Mulch came on and were solid then Gridlock came on and they were one of the worst bands that I have ever seen.

I don't know about Kix...it's a kid's cereal. Kid tested, mother approved and all.

I always wated to see a fight between a White Lion, a White Snake, and a Def Leopard.

You've filled my mind all day with metal band name thoughts. I won't bore you with all the others I came up with ... but I do like Fred's choice. Simple and elegant.

Also, I always had a soft spot for the simplicity of GTR, with Steve Hackett and Steve Howe -- they just took "guitar" and dropped the vowels. Not quite metal, I know ...

One of the quirkier band names I remember was a one-hit wonder in the mid-60s, called Hedgehogs Anonymous. I also think Steppenwolf is a great name. If they were around today, they'd probably be a heavy metal band.

And ranea, I love that you're a fan of Disturbed.

I saw their cd, but had no idea they were influenced by Sleep. I will have to check them out. Another one of my current favorites are Acid King. They are a bit like Sleep and Electric Wizard, but with much more of a groove.

My brother and I were reading a medical book one time and came across an entry for a sucking chest wound. We both agreed that Sucking Chest Wound is the greatest name for a metal band ever. How has it not been taken yet?

They did a funny mock commercial on SNL once about a movie soundtrack with all metal bands and they just kept coming up with weirder and weirder names. Some of them at the beginning were real but then they started making them up. I wish I could remember them because I recall cracking up over it.
