Heavy Metal Time Machine is closed until further notice....

Tuesday, November 18th, 2014

It is not easy for me to write this, but as of now I am stepping down and taking time away from Heavy Metal Time Machine. I wish that I had better news to post today, but alas this is something that I feel I must do as fatigue and exhaustion has crept into my life. As our more faithful readers will recall I took over this blog from Metal Mark and as much as I have loved it from the very start I know feel the need to bow out until further notice. Due to a myriad of health problems brought on from being born with only one (dinky and deformed!) kidney I have found myself at a all-too familiar point in life where once again my weakened immune system is wrecking havoc on day to day activities. As such I need time away to sort things out and (lord willing) find my strength and drive again. I won't be gone for good as I hate to say never again and there are still a few bands that I will continue to throw my support behind and try to help out from the sidelines. After all I have always said that I am a fan first and a writer second. But otherwise friends I am afraid that Heavy Metal Time Machine will be closed until further notice and that's just how it's got to be. With that said folks always keep it loud and proud.....

Heavy Metal Time Machine is under quarantine!

11/13/14

OK, it's nothing that serious, but I've been under the weather for the past couple of days and I'm not my usual perky self! After attempting to write up a couple of reviews over the last two days I've seen the error of my ways (the articles were a hot mess kids!) and it's back to bed for yours truly. I'm hoping to be up and about by the weekend, but at this rate I'm still super tired and feeling the effects of what has been a nasty bug. Granted it does not help when your immune system is all but shot, but either way it's bed rest I need and bed rest that I shall get! In the meantime be sure to keep it heavy and keep it loud friends! As Arnold says "I'll be back"!!!!!!!

Savage Master-Mask Of The Devil

Skol Records
2014

Last week I was thrilled to introduce our readers to Kentucky N.W.O.T.H.M act Savage Master (link provided below). Now it is my extreme pleasure to report back to all of you that I have heard the band's full-length debut album in it's entirety and yes, it is EVERY bit as good as I had hoped it would be and then some! That speaks volumes about everyone involved in the creation of Savage Master's first official recording, but before we talk about the people who were tasked with magically transforming Savage Master's larger than life stage sound to studio tape let's fill in a few more facts about this female-fronted/occult-driven band. Co-founded by Adam Neal (guitars) and Stacey "Savage" Peak (lead vocals), with the band's theatrical live show inspired in part by Mario Bava's 1960 gothic horror classic "Black Sunday" (look it up kids as it's a real doozy!) and perhaps even The Mentors(!) and the rest of the band soon filled out by various musicians that Adam Neal knew and worked with in the past, Savage Master has remarkably enough only been existence for a little over a year! And yet in that small time frame this overtly satanic band has made the leap from unsigned underground favorites to securing a deal with Skol Records. And of course everyone should already know that Skol Records is responsible for several albums which I  have previously covered and have since made a part of my personal music collection such as Taist of Iron's "Ressurrection", Robespierre's "Die You Heathen, Die!" and Nitro's "Lethal Dose" so this particular signing makes a great deal of sense. That doesn't mean that the black arts were not used in one fashion or another to speed up this band's musical evolution LOL! It merely means that Savage Master shares more than a few of the same great qualities that made those previously mentioned three artists so good to begin with so this musical relationship looks like a match made in heaven...or hell if you will! Especially seeing as Savage Master's sound harkens back to the "good old days". Sonically-speaking it's bands like Exciter and Venom that initially come to mind when it comes to Savage Master. In no way is that a bad thing, but like the band members behind this project there is so much more to "Mask Of The Devil" once you take the time to really listen. As diverse as lead vocalist Stacy Peak is when it comes to her vocal inspirations*, Savage Master as a whole seems to be inspired by not just Exciter and Venom (musically and lyrically F.Y.I.!), but eighties metal (Brocas Helm, Dark Wizard, Gotham City, Lizzy Bordon, OZ, Warlord, Stormwitch and even Taist Of Iron(!), traditional heavy metal and doom (Accept, Malice, Halloween, Black Sabbath, etc.) and the N.W.O.B.H.M. scene (Blood Money, Avenger, Grim Reaper, Cloven Hoof, Pagan Altar, Witchfinder General, Witchfynde, Desolation Angels and Hell). Incidentally that is a hell of a lot of enchanting charms  for a release which ends up clocking in at under 30 minutes! But damn if it doesn't just fit all snug and tight! Which brings us all the way back around to the beginning and the crew responsible for laying all of this sinister metal to tape! Co-produced by Michael Kent O' Bryan and Savage Master members Stacey "Savage" Peak and Adam Neal, "Mask Of The Devil" was engineered and mixed by Michael Kent O' Bryan at Wax & Tape Studios before it was mastered by the Bart Gabriel at Skol Records Studio. Collectively this lot has given fans of occult metal and N.W.O.T.H.M. plenty to get excited about as "Mask Of The Devil" is as classic a debut album album as one can get! If there's a downside to be had it's the album's short-length. At not even 30 minutes a album like "Mask Of The Devil" disappears as quickly as it appears. If you walk out of the room for even a few minutes you are likely to miss a great deal of the action. There's that and then there is the lyrically content of "Mask Of The Devil". More often than not Savage Master hits things out of the ballpark thanks to some truly evil and downright spooky material. However there are times on Savage Master's debut when the possibility arises and one just has to ask the question that should NEVER be asked. And that is "You didn't happen to go to a songwriting workshop taught by Cronos did you?"! All lyrical-cheesiness aside, "Mask Of The Devil" is a fun, throwback metal kind of album with bewitching female vocals and a vibe which will remind more than a few people of the early punk-infused British metal scene (Iron Maiden's first two albums, Venom, Tank, etc.). It's also a great debut album for a band that is still young and growing and poised for bigger and better things in the years to come! You can find Savage Master online here: https://www.facebook.com/savagemaster666 and for more information on Skol Records be sure to check out the labels Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/skolrecords

*While waiting to receive a promo copy of "Mask Of The Devil" I took the time to do further resource on this spook-fest of a band. I can across an interview that Stacey did where she said that besides Rob Halford (vocally-speaking) it was bands such as Witchfinder General, Warlock, Candlemass, Danzig, Angel Witch, Diamond Head and Coven (to name a few!) that influenced her as an artist.

Saturday Singles: Snowy Shaw-"Fire" and Sleepy Hollow-"Bound By Blood"

It's been awhile since I last did a Saturday Singles feature so for that I do apologize. To make it up to all of my faithful followers (all half dozen of you!) I would like to present two songs that have personally been rocking my days and nights! First up is Snowy Shaw (Cans, Mad Architect, Notre Dame, ex-Illwill, XXX, Maryann Cotton (live), ex-Dream Evil, ex-King Diamond, ex-Nightrage (live), ex-Sabaton (live), ex-Scheepers (live), ex-Therion (live), ex-Mercyful Fate, ex-Memento Mori, ex-Colossus (live), ex-K2, ex-Loud N'Nasty, ex-Them Sluts! (live) and ex-Snowy Shaw and the Star-Spangled Banned) with his take on a all-time favorite of mine and then we will have a new cut from traditional heavy metal outfit Sleepy Hollow. Enjoy!
Wunderwurld Music
2014

Snowy Shaw is pretty well-known within metal circles thanks to his involvement with King Diamond and Merciful Fate as well as Dream Evil. With "Fire" Snowy Shaw pays tribute to the one and only Arthur Brown and if you are old enough and weird enough like I am you might remember hearing the original version of this on Dr. Demento back in the day! Originally released in 1968(!), "Fire" was issued as a single and it also appeared on the album "The Crazy World of Arthur Brown". With the opening line "I am the god of hell fire and I bring you...FIRE!" becoming a well known catchphrase this dark and twisted psychedelic rock number would go on to be covered by everyone from The Ventures to God Dethroned! What I like about Snowy Shaw's version is how well this one-time drummer turned front-man captures the spirit of Arthur Brown while simultaneously giving it modern shock rock makeover that is part Rob Zombie and part King Diamond! The video version below was captured live in Sweden on Halloween 2012 and it is taken from the "Snowy Shaw Live DVD/CD Box, The Liveshow: 25 Years Of Madness In The Name Of Metal." which can be found here:http://shop.textalk.se/en/shop.php?id=25422

Pure Steel Records
2014

Next up we have traditional/power metal band (and Heavy Metal Time Machine fave!) Sleepy Hollow with their brand new single "Bound By Blood". This is first single from the band's as yet untitled 2015 release and since we last checked in with this band (http://metalmark.blogspot.com/2012/03/sleepy-hollow-skull-13.html) there has been a few changes in personnel. Unfortunately "Due to personal differences and scheduling" Sleepy Hollow and vocalist Bob Mitchell have decided to part ways. That's a big time bummer. Fortunately for Sleepy Hollow and their fans the gods of metal stepped right in and new lead vocalist Chapel Stormcrow (Altar Of Dagon) sounds downright killer on "Bound By Blood"! As does the band's new bass player Rich Fuester who is also of Altar Of Dagon fame! While the doom metal influences of Chapel and Rich's other band will fit in nicely with Sleepy Hollow's new direction it's a bit odd to consider that Altar Of Dagon evolved out of a melodic death metal band called Alazith! Credit has to go to guitarist Steve Stegg then as he was able to see the perfect picture that would be created by these new additions. Steve made the right call with Sleepy Hollow's new vocalist and bass player as "Bound By Blood" feels like empowered Sleepy Hollow with a tougher attitude and a darker edge! With Sleepy Hollow reportedly busy at Dirge studios in Newark, DE recording 11 tracks in all for their 2015 follow-up to "Skull 13" (an album that I will jump all over once it hits the open market!) one has to imagine that Steve Stegg and company will deliver a fantastic new album next year!

Vicious Nature-Salvation

Self-Release/Independent
2014

Formed in 2012 and calling the West Midlands their home turf, Vicious Nature is a heavy/power metal band with two separate three-track EPs to their name so far in 2013's "Fight For Your Life" and this February, 2014 release, "Salvation". With a formidable line-up in place featuring ex-Marshall Law members Andy Pyke* (vocals) and Andy Southwell (guitars), one-time Cloven Hoof member Jon Brown (drums) and bassist Mark Culley (ex-Cerebal Fix) and the seemingly relentless urge to craft something fresh and unique for themselves this UK-based group has beefed-up what was already muscular heavy metal to begin with! What Vicious Nature started on "Fight For Your Life" they no doubt intended to finish with "Salvation" and that is all thanks to a clear-cut strategic approach that finds the sheer force of this jagged-edge band matched only by a haunting sound that perfectly conveys the bleak despair and total darkness of N.W.O.B.H.M.-infused metallic doom**! For this UK four-piece a EP like "Salvation" is the proper steeping-stone to get from point A) unsigned to point B) signed and adored by the metal masses! Vicious Nature is more then just the individual talents and their respective resumes. This is heavy and harsh dark metal from a traditionally-minded power metal source that is not to be reckoned with or ignored! You can find "Salvation" and the band's other recommended EP, "Fight For Your Life", online here: http://www.viciousnature.co.uk/

*Besides playing with the well-known Marshall Law, Andy Pyke has performed with the likes Damien, Viva, Damage, Inc., Detroit and Hurt!

**A little slice of  John Brown's past life in Cloven Hoof perhaps? Maybe some Witchfinder General on steroids?

Kontrust-Explositive

Napalm Records
2014

"Explositive" is the latest release from Austria genre-mix and max/crossover rock band Kontrust. Having previously been exposed to this band's wild and crazy antics thanks to 2012's "Second Hand Wonderland" (http://metalmark.blogspot.com/2012/04/kontrust-second-hand-wonderland.html) I sort of knew what I was getting into with the band's new album. And by that I mean that I came in expecting the unexpected! For those who know and love Kontrust no further explanation will be needed so just buy "Explositive" and be done with it. For everyone else here is the deal (or, as best as we can (seeing as this one is way left of anything resembling normal heavy metal and/or rock!) we are going to try to explain the ins and outs of this "interesting" band on paper and just by peeking at the first number on "Explositive"!). On one hand the band is hook happy and spiritually free and on opener "Dance" lead singer Agata is as lively and carefree as the music itself. The group uses bouncy beats and the track's title almost lives up to it's name. Everything is right with the world it would seem. But, then the madness starts to rear it's unnerving face! For it seems as soon as you think you've got the band or the number figured out these hard metal guitar solos hack and slash their way through the door and that party you thought you were at turns into a bloodbath! Underground trash metal riffs worm their way deep into what was otherwise a pop song causing all kinds of hell to break loose! So, it's pop rock and street lethal hard and heavy metal doing the midnight tango while the world casually burns down around them! And that's just track one for you folks! For this bizarrely bouncy band, which incidentally was formed back in 2001 out of the ashes of a group called Suicide Mission and is known for dressing up in lederhosen for some odd reason for their live shows(!), nothing is really off limits and it's the old stand-by of "let's throw everything but the kitchen sink into our music and call it a day!". When it comes to the full-length "Explositive" it's not just the the sky that is the limit but the universe itself! By utilizing unusual instrumentals and brazenly abandoning any sense of logic when it comes to song titles and song lyrics Kontrust makes unusual music for unusual people. All of which would make it sound as if this album is nonstop hilarity in the making right? Somehow it's never that simple. While there might just be some strong ideas tossed about on their latest album for Kontrust it does not exactly translate into a sure-fire winner. Yes, fans should appreciate the latest body of work from Kontrust, but it's highly that "Explositive" will be the type of album that will attract casual listeners. This has all the hallmarks of an album that would be listened to once and then put aside for something more structurally sound. And that in and of itself was the problem I had with 2012's "Second Hand Wonderland". As weirdly charming and sonically disruptive as it was to the senses it did not make for a casual "hit once and then hit repeat" release which all but ruined it's long-term worthiness. Kontrust are very much like every one's favorite kooky relative that is fun to be with on holidays, but if you were to live with him or her ALL YEAR LONG the novelty of it all would quickly wear off. In a nutshell "Explositive" was fun the first time around, but like some things in life it's never the same experience the second time around....

Jacobs Moor-All That Starts

Bleedingstar Records
2014

Self-produced by the band members themselves, "All That Starts" is the full-length debut album from Austrian metal act Jacobs Moor. Founded in 2010 by Richard Krenmaier (Speed Limit, ex-Stygma IV, ex-Surrender, ex-Big Heat, Della Street), Johnny Sommerer and Rainer Lidauer (ex-Far Beyond Innocence, ex-Marcin Suder), with both the studio line-up for "All That Starts" and the live line-up of this Vienna-based act listed below*, Jacobs Moor is another relatively new band whose sound and style covers many different genres. Influenced by the likes of Machine Head, Devil Driver, Leprous, Slayer, Testament, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Dream Theater, Pantera and Lamb Of God and being the benefactors of lead singer Richard Krenmaier's all encompassing voice this Austrian stretches modern metal and progressive/melodic power /thrash metal into all kinds of unusual shapes! As dark and oppressive as the music might be at times (and also as gloomy as the band members themselves intended the art-work above to convey!) it's also strangely illuminating making "All That Starts" a record well-worth visiting from time to time. Available pretty much wherever fine music is to be found these days ( iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, etc), "All That Starts" is a fine start for Jacobs Moor. Especially seeing as it does the band members and the metal community as a whole proud by offering up another much-needed soundtrack for this crumbling world for which we are all to blame...

 * Jacobs Moor's studio line-up included:
   Richard Krenmaier-vocals
Johnny Sommerer-guitars, bass (except "Faceless Man") and cellos
   Rainer Lidauer-drums

  Along with the following guests:
  Werner Taus-bass on "Faceless Man"
Günther Maier-2nd guitar solo on "Final Sound"

  Meanwhile the live band features:
  Richard Krenmaier-vocals
  Johannes Pichler-guitars
  Rupert Träxler-guitars
  Stephan Först-bass
  Rainer Lidauer-drums

Interview with Dissorted guitarist Florian Schadhauser

Recently I had the chance to talk with Dissorted guitarist Florian Schadhauser. I want to thank him for taking time away from the band to chat with all of us here at Heavy Metal Time Machine. Enjoy!
Andy (A)-Let's run it all down. What is your band's name and who plays what?
Florian (F)-Our band’s name is “Dissorted”. We are from Bavaria, Germany.
Our band consists of Mirco (vocals), Florian (guitar), Dillon (bass), Sebastian (guitar) and Martin (drums).

A-Speaking of the name where did it come from?
F-I founded the band with a good friend of mine (he was the first drummer of Dissorted) in 2004. One Night we were sitting at a barbecue in his garden, having a few beers and we were talking about the band’s name.
After a few suggestions, he came up with “Dissorted”. Since this is not a regular word, I was asking him, what this means. He said, he had been sitting in front of a guitar amplifier and looking at the distortion knob. And as he was thinking about the word “distortion”, the name “Dissorted” came to his mind. We thought, that the name sounded good and we kept it. This is what happens, if you confront drummers with guitar amplifiers…But the band we started in 2004 is quite different from what the band is now. I am the only original member. As we moved to Munich in 2009, we started the band from the scratch and developed our own and new style with new members. Actually, we don’t play any songs, that were written before 2009.
A-It's all about the thrash isn't it? And by that I mean you guess do a damn fine job of it on "I"!
F-We are all into fast old school heavy metal, so it’s probably natural to end up in a thrashing band. This is what we like to do. But we don’t have strict boundaries. Everybody in the band throws in some influences to spice up the basis of the band. We always try to sound unique and authentic. Over the years we developed our own style by combining bay area thrash metal like Testament, old Metallica, Exodus with some good old heavy metal like Iced Earth. But this came very natural.
A-All the same is exceptional! How's the reception been for your new EP in your home country?
F-For this EP we wanted to do the best job, we could do at this moment. We are very happy with the result.
The reception is really great. Some songs have already been played in local radio stations in Germany and even in the USA. We have already sent copies of the EP to USA or Chile.
A-Where do you go from here? Will you be playing outside of Germany?
F-Our goal for 2015 is to play as many concerts as possible. Most of them will be in Germany. But we also have the possibility to play in Austria and Italy next year. Maybe we can add a few more places the next months.
A-What's one thing about Dissorted that people might not know?
F-Actually, we are very open and communicative. So if you know us, you get to know our dark secrets very fast – if you want to or not…One thing, not everybody knows, is, that our singer went on stage in Koblenz in fall 2013 with a stomach flu, that really broke out at the day of the concert. He was in a bad condition, but he said, he wanted to do the show, because we drove 500 km for the concert and the people in front of the stage were waiting for us. After the second chorus of the first song he put away his microphone and run through the crowd, heading for the toilette. We finished the song and started the second song without him, because he hadn’t come back. I was playing with a wireless guitar system. So I went off stage – still playing – and visited him on the toilet. Unfortunately the stomach flu had already done its work and he was puking.
As I came back on stage (the rest of us was still playing the second song of the set), we stopped and said, we can’t finish our set, because our singer was ill. As the audience was requesting more stuff, we said, we could play a few songs without vocals. So we started off the second song again. During the first chorus, a guy (looking like an undead) was fighting his way through the audience towards the stage – it was Mirco. He came up on stage and we finished the concert together (except for three songs, that were too hard to sing in his condition). Right after the show he fled to the backstage area and puked in the wastepaper basket.
And I really have to say, that I respect him a lot for that, because most of the musicians would have canceled the concert. But this also shows his (and our) passion for the band.
A-I'll say! That's some drop dead serious determination there! Wow! So tell me Florian, a kid walks up to you and asks what thrash is. What's the one album that you would hand him?
F-Slayer – Reign In Blood

A-'Nuff said!
A-Either or time. Metallica or Megadeth?
F-Early days: Metallica. Today: none of them
A-I'd say "Kill 'Em All" up to "Master Of Puppets", but after Cliff died the band died with him. Megadeth wise I've always been partial to "Peace Sells..." and "So Far, So good...So What!". How about this one, Exodus or Anthrax?
F-Early Days: Anthrax (because of the great live shows). Today: Exodus (great records during the last years)
A-Testament or Slayer?
F-Testament (unfortunately Slayer isn’t the band, it used to be)
A-Agreed. It's sad, but true. That brings up a good question though. If Dissorted could play with any one band who would it be?
F-Testament or Exodus
A-Either one of those would be a show I'd like to see! Where would you like to see the band in five years?
F-Being in the same line up like now. Playing gigs frequently. Having two three full length records.
But we don’t have strict goals or bondages about what we should achieve. We will always do our thing, have fun and enjoy what earn with that.

A-Good answer! Where should we direct people who might want to pick up a copy of your new EP?
F-We have a homepage (www.dissorted.de), where you can find news, songs, videos, pictures etc. and contact us. We also have a facebook-page (www.facebook.com/dissorted). You can contact us there, too. You can either write to the band contact or to a single member. Both is OK for us. You will certainly get an answer.
A-I always give bands the last word. Anything you want to add or say to fans Florian?

F-The coolest thing for us, is to get in touch with the people at our concerts. So if you like our music, just come by and have a beer with us. If you have already heard our record, feel free to give us some feedback – we are always open for that. And of course be aware of future actions of our band.
